mindfulness activities for boosting self-worth

I realized this past week (after someone brought it to my attention) that I didn't have any resources in The Mindfulness Library related to boosting self-worth and personal value. So, of course, I got to work and created the "I Am A Star" mindfulness activity packet.

Self-worth and personal value are topics near and dear to me. I have struggled all my life and I still struggle with self-worth and confidence issues, so I can't believe it has taken me this long to create a mindfulness resource for it. In case you haven't read my story, I share some of my struggles there.

MINDFULNESS ACTIVITY PACKET FOR BOOSTING SELF-WORTH

When I think about self-worth and confidence, I want to help others see the unique, special light within them and help them share that light with the world. And, what better way to talk about sharing light than to use a star?

In the guided story, the star comes to us and reminds us of the wonderful light we already have within. The brilliant, golden light coming from the star awakens the brilliant, golden light within us. I also added into the story, some of the most valuable, powerful, and precious things I could think of to help your kids understand the more abstract concepts of self-worth, confidence, and personal value.

So, before you get started, here are some helpful tips:

  • Each and every child/person on this Earth is the most important, the most worthy, and the most valued AND yet there isn't any one child/person who is more important or worthy or valued than any other. We are equal.
  • Every child/person knows deep inside just how important, worthy, and valued they are, but they sometimes forget. This guided story was written to remind them of what they already have.
  • Boosting personal power is a part of this guided story, but when we boost power, we boost power "for" not power "over".
  • A word of caution for using this guided story with kids who are already over-confident or aggressive.
  • It would be helpful to have a discussion before the guided story to talk about the qualities you are working on building. I have written the guided story to include tangible, concrete examples of the qualities to help kids understand the concept and the "feeling" of the more abstract words. For example, I use a treasure chest to describe the feeling of value.
  • Change up the qualities or the objects for your specific needs. It's as easy as swapping out the words in the script.

The whole activity packet is in The Mindfulness Library waiting for you. It includes:

  • "I Am A Star" guided story script
  • Discussion questions
  • 6 star affirmation cards
  • 6 customizable affirmation cards that your kids can personalize and create
  • 2 deep breathing printables
  • 2 meditation reflection printables

Using other resources for boosting self-worth

There are many resources in The Mindfulness Library that can be tweaked into self-worth boosting activities. Here are some examples:

  1. "Rainbow Meditation" can be easily adapted to build any kind of personal quality. Just swap out the words to add in the qualities you would like to strengthen. You can even use the same word/quality for all of the colors.
  2. "Pebble Meditation" is another that can be easily adapted. Just pick four qualities to strengthen (or any number) and a concrete, tangible representation of that quality to assign to the pebble.
I like "Pebble Meditation" because- first, it gives kids something to focus on during meditation and second, it makes somewhat abstract qualities like value and worthiness more concrete and understandable for kids. I would suggest picking the four qualities and their "objects" with the kids as an additional activity in understanding what they are trying to grow. Here's an example to get your creative juices flowing:

    • Pebble 1 represents a penny for worth/worthiness
    • Pebble 2 represents a treasure chest for value
    • Pebble 3 represents a lion for power
    • Pebble 4 represents a gem for preciousness
  3. "Tiny Bubbles" can be used to release feelings and thoughts you don't want to keep like shame and unworthiness.
