Unfortunately, I didn't have these tools as a child, so my personal foundation was anything but strong and resilient. I met some challenges, both big and small along the way, and I fell hard because of it.

 

Let me tell you about my biggest challenge- the one that forced me to find a better way.

As a child, my biggest dream was to become a doctor. So, I pushed myself to do well in school and I did. I graduated from high school with high honors, finished a bachelor's degree in three years, and graduated summa cum laude with my first master's degree.     


Now, do I tell you this to brag about myself? No, of course not! Definitely not my style!


I tell you this because even with all of these accomplishments, I still didn't believe in myself enough to even apply to medical school. Growing up, I lacked any and all confidence in myself and so, I became a quiet, shy introvert who was afraid to take any kind of risk. I didn't believe I was smart enough or good enough and deep down...

 

...I didn't want to fail.


So, after my first master's degree, instead of applying to medical school, I went back to graduate school to hide out in a lab doing biomedical research for a few more years and get a PhD. This way, I could prove I was smart enough, and then for sure I could find a medical school that would want me.


But, getting a PhD in biomedical science is certainly not about hiding out in a lab. Not only did I have to do the research, but I had to present and defend it IN FRONT REAL-LIFE PEOPLE, YIKES! Can you imagine presenting in front of some of the world's most intelligent minds in the field with no self-esteem or confidence?

 

Eventually, it all caught up with me- the stress, the intimidation, and the inferiority I was feeling- and so, after my qualifying exam, I was told I did not pass to the next level. I failed. (I really ended up with a second master's degree, but that wasn't the goal now was it?)


So, after my failure, I spiraled down into a deep, dark hole for ten years, completely unhappy, empty, and wandering through life with no direction. You see, I ended up in the deep, dark hole because first, I didn't have the self-esteem to keep myself out of the hole, and second, I didn't have the knowledge or tools to pull myself out once I found myself at the bottom of it.

After some time and some crazy coincidences ??, I found myself back in school again studying mind-body medicine, and I discovered there are seven building blocks that we all need in our personal foundation to live happy and meaningful lives. And yes, confidence is one of these building blocks. So, in an "aha" kind of moment, I realized that my earlier failure wasn't because I wasn't smart enough- I failed because I didn't have any confidence in myself.
